Europe is very committed to development and to Cuba, High Representative of the EU assertsHavana, Sep 9 (ACN) The assertion that Europe is very committed to development in Latin America and the Caribbean, and in particular to Cuba, stated by Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Deputy President of the European Commission, is leading today in the 2nd Joint Council meetings between Cuba and the EU.

During the meeting currently held in Havana, the distinguished representative pointed out that the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement (ADPC) has allowed the strengthening of relations and has created several opportunities for exchange, as well as a large number of bilateral meetings.
As a result of the Agreement, five political dialogues have already been held on mutual interest issues, such as human rights, unilateral coercive measures and sustainable development, Mogherini said.
She added that EU member states are interested in strengthening the follow-up of political dialogues and at the same time launching new sectorial exchanges on agriculture, energy, climate change and the environment.
In particular, she noted that since development cooperation restarted in 2008, the EU has allocated more than 200 million euros to support Cuba's development in three key sectors: sustainable agriculture and food security, the environment and climate change, and the modernization of the country.
The European diplomat explained that in recent years cooperation has focused on the most relevant aims for both parties, that is, ending hunger, moving towards gender equality, building a world with sustainable energy, decent work and economic growth to help reduce inequalities.
She also commented this is a special year because Havana celebrates five centuries of its foundation and hopes that relations and friendship with Europe will be stronger through meetings such as this one.
