HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 19 (ACN) The State Council, in accordance with the new Constitution of the Republic, which among its postulates favors the social reinsertion of persons deprived of liberty; taking into account requests from relatives and in compliance with the policy established by the Cuban Government several years ago, agreed to pardon 2,604 persons sanctioned with effective sentences of deprivation of liberty.
In order to reach that decision, the good behaviour of the convicted persons during the serving of the sentence, the extinguished time of the sanction, as well as the characteristics and results of the acts for which they were sanctioned were evaluated.
Similarly, the age and chronic illnesses suffered by some were analysed, and women, young people and older adults in particular were included.
In all cases, those selected have served at least one third of the sanction imposed by the courts.
The pardon was not granted to those serving time for the following crimes: murder, rape, pedophilia with violence, homicide, corruption of minors, theft and unlawful slaughter of large cattle, as well as for conduct related to drugs, theft of fuel, aggravated figures of theft with violence or intimidation of persons, acts of corruption and recidivist and multi-recidivist prisoners, and those who were previously pardoned and subsequently re-admitted to prison for the commission of a new criminal act, as well as those who were subsequently re-admitted to prison for the commission of a new criminal act.
