HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 7(ACN) Ricardo Cabrisas, vice-president of the Council of Ministers, who presides the Cuban delegation to the International Economic Forum of Saint Petersburg, held a fraternal meeting with Valentina Matvienko, President of the Council of the Federation or Upper Chamber of the Russian Parliament.
Matvienko, in welcoming the Cuban Vice President, highlighted the heroic resistance of the Cuban people against the growing threats and the intensification of the blockade of the United States against Cuba.
Vice-President Cabrisas expressed his gratitude for Russia's historic position of principle in support of the Cuban people's struggle against the blockade, recently aggravated by new measures of the Trump Administration, such as the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton law, and the prohibition against cruise ships and educational trips, among other sanctions, firmly rejected in a Declaration of the Revolutionary Government issued yesterday.
He also rejected the application by the West of coercive measures and unilateral sanctions against the Russian Federation and appreciated the role played by the Council of the Federation, and especially by Matvienko, in promoting and strengthening relations between the two countries in various spheres.
Cabrisas emphasized the sustained growth of the bilateral economic-commercial exchange in recent years, as well as the need to continue strengthening Cuban exports to the Russian market, especially in the sectors of biotechnology, the medical-pharmaceutical industry and the development and export of citrus fruits, among others.
He also referred to the possibility of attracting direct investment of Russian capital for key projects for the socioeconomic development of the Island.
Matvienko highlighted the increase in interparliamentary ties between Moscow and Havana, and in this sense announced the presence of a parliamentary delegation from Russia in the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the founding of Havana, which will take place in the Cuban capital in mid-November.
Prior to his visit to St. Petersburg, Cabrisas Ruiz met with the Governor of the Central Bank of Russia, Elvira Nabiullina; the Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce, Georgui Kalamanov; the Director of the Ministry of Finance, Konstantin Vischkovski, as well as several company directors who are actively involved in projects with Cuba.
