HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 30 (acn) Cuba won undefeated the 2019 U19 Boy´s Pan American Volleyball Cup based in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, when defeating Mexico, defending champion, 3-0 (25-18, 26-24 and 25-19).
The tournament granted the last two tickets to the age-group FIVB World Championship to take place in Tunisia from next August 21 to 30, but Cuba had already qualified to the universal contest thanks to its triumph in the U18 NORCECA qualifiers held in Honduras last year.
In addition to Cuba and United States, which had already earned their berths to the coming global competition for the NORCECA area, the last tickets went to Mexico and the DR, the latter won the bronze medal by beating Chile 3-1 (25-22, 22- 25, 25-16, 26-24).
In the final match, the Cuban offensive was headed by outside hitters José Miguel Gutierrez, who scored 16 points, and Victor Andreu (12), both with four aces, while central attacker Reynier Ibar contributed 9 units, according to the website of the event.
Luis David Hernandez and Franky Hernandez stood out for Mexico with 11 and 9 units, respectively.
The Cubans earned eight of the 12 prizes to the best athletes, including José Miguel Gutierrez who won the MVP award.
Victor Andreu and Gutierrez were the best two outside hitters, while Luis Vidal Allen and Dominican Dawilin Mendez were picked as central blockers.
Gutierrez was also the leader in aces and his teammates Eduardo Hernandez, Christian Thondike and Ricardo Gomez were chosen as best opposite hitter, setter and libero, in that order.
The rest of the individual awards went to Puerto Rican Gabriel Pantoja who stood out as best receiver; Nicaraguan Jordan Carcache highlighted as best defender and Dominican Fuhit Edouarde was the top scorer of the tournament.
