Cuba and China sign MoU on geologyHAVANA, Cuba, Mar 27 (ACN) A memorandum of understanding was signed by representatives of the Geological Survey of the People's Republic of China and the Institute of Geology and Paleontology (IGP) of Cuba on scientific-technical collaboration in earth sciences.
Wang Yan, vice president of the institution of that Asian country, and engineer Luis Gómez Narbona, general director of the IGP (Geological Service of Cuba), signed the document at the Ministry of Energy and Mines, considered the first of its kind in the specialty, said the visitor in exclusive statements to the Cuban News Agency.
He added that the document contains cooperation projects in mineral research, including zeolites, nickel and chromium, the establishment of geoparks and the history of the specialty, all to contribute to raising the level of the national economy and popular benefit.
Gómez Narbona pointed out that they laid the foundations to establish mutual aid contracts and it is outlined to begin with an agreement that includes the preparation of a geochemical map of Cuba, in order to detect new oil and gas deposits, as well as other spheres of the economy, such as agriculture and environmental protection.
According to the text, there will be exchanges of scientific and technical information, study visits, individual research, and organization of symposia, conferences and workshops, joint projects and others available to both parties.
The areas of application are related to basic geology, geochemical and geophysical mapping, remote sensing, geoinformation technology and geodatabase, mineral resource assessment and exploration technology, environmental geology, hydro and marine, as well as geohazards.
PhD Enrique Castellanos Abella, director of the Geological Service of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, announced that his Chinese colleague will sign this Wednesday a memorandum of understanding with the Petroleum Research Center.
