Eastern Cuban province increases banana plantations

Eastern Cuban province increases banana plantationsHAVANA, Cuba, Mar 13 (ACN) Omar Perez Lopez, delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture (Minag) in the Cuban eastern province of Las Tunas, reported they will have 7,194 hectares of banana planted by the end of the spring of this year, for which will be decisive the recovery of marabou-infested areas.

The official said they already have 6,261 ha of bananas in the eight municipalities of Las Tunas, owned either by private farmers or State companies, and all of them will contribute to the goal of selling 30 pounds per person of food to each inhabitant of the province.
He added their production levels in the past years have been hindered by the intense drought and by not having all the lands prepared on time. As a strategy to palliate the destructive effects of natural disasters they have scattered plantations throughout the entire province.
When Hurricane Irma stroke in 2017, it devastated the banana plantations of the municipality of Jesus Menendez, the largest producer, causing shortages for months.
According to the 2019 program, the municipality of Las Tunas is the most comprehensive, with 1,349 hectares, followed by Puerto Padre, 1,192, and Jesús Menéndez, 1,052, while Colombia is the smallest, with 474, which coincides with the fact that the most populated territories are those with the largest planting areas.
The fulfillment of the banana program is subject to the balance and strategy for the use of the seed, starting from the existence in the province of a factory with capacity to produce half a million vitro plants annually, as well as a seed farm at the provincial level and one in each municipality.
The other program in development in the productive poles in Las Tunas is the planting of cassava, with an existing area of 4,040 hectares, representing 56 percent of the planned, hence the Minag expects to meet the commitment in the spring of 2020.
