HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 15 (ACN) Close to 70 percent of the Isle of youth, the second largest island of the Cuban archipelago, is covered by forests; therefore the local government has set up a strategy to prevent fires.
Ernesto Diaz Carter, on behalf of the rangers, alluded to the actions to be taken by each of the actors involved in the protection of forests and plantation areas, as established in the plans for reducing dangers, vulnerabilities and risks of each entity.
He reported that at the close of 2018, in the territory were calculated more than 79,000 pesos for losses to the economy in forest fires, affecting 114.6 hectares, including 45.1 percent of natural forests and the rest corresponds to plantations in the agricultural sector.
He pointed out that difficulties persist with the thinning of the forests - removal of trees to manage the conditions of competition and distance between individuals -, obstructed roads and not all companies include in the economic plan the expenses for affectations or help to third parties in case of large scale disasters.
He insisted on the need to determine and prepare strategic management points to minimize the occurrence of fires, especially in rural areas, where the population has little perception of risk.
The critical period for the occurrence of these events, caused mainly by human activity, is from January 1 to May 31.
