HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 28 (acn) Seventeen Cuban rowers attend from today the 2018 Pan American Games Qualification Regatta to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in search of tickets for the Lima 2019 Pan-Am Games.
With a stage at the Lagoon Rodrigo de Freitas, same venue of the rowing tournament of the 2016 Olympics, the 12 men and five women from the Caribbean island will participate in 12 out of the 13 convened events.
Angel Garcia, Cuba´s national rowing commissioner, told ACN that their goal is to qualify all the 12 crews to Lima.
The Cuban delegation is headed by Angel Fournier, multi-medalist in world cups and championships, who in addition to the men single sculls event (M1x), will also compete in the double (M2x), with Adrian Oquendo; and quadruple (M4x) along with Oquendo, Boris Guerra and Jorge Patterson.
Similar responsibility will have the woman Yariulvis Cobas, as she is also registered in three events, the women single sculls (W1x); the double (W2x) with Aimee Hernandez; and the quadruple with Hernandez, Rosana Serrano and Raima Ortiz.
The Cuban men´s squad will also attend the coxless pair, coxless four, the lightweight double sculls and the lightweight coxless four events; while the women´s team will also participate in the single lightweight sculls and the double lightweight sculls.
The 2018 Pan American Games Qualification Regatta is attended by 156 boats, 85 of men and 71 of women.
Cuba ranked third in the previous edition held of Toronto 2015, with two gold, three silver and two bronze medals; behind Canada (8-1-2) and the United States (2-5-2), and ahead of Argentina (1-2-5), Chile (1-1-2), Mexico (1-0-1) and Brazil (0-1-0).
