Congress of Marine Sciences kicks off in Havana

Congress of Marine Sciences kicks off in HavanaHAVANA, Cuba, Oct 16 (ACN) The XI Congress of Marine Sciences, MarCuba 2018, was inaugurated on Monday at the Conventions Center in Havana under the motto "Today's sciences for the coasts and the sea of the future".

For the first time in its history, the event will feature a symposium dedicated exclusively to the study of the environmental impact of nautical and recreational activities.
At the inaugural gala, the National Marine Science Award 2018 was presented to outstanding researchers Gladys Margarita Gallardo, Gustavo Arencibia Carballo, Jesús Manuel Beltrán González and José Espinoza Sáez.
The event also included a keynote lecture by Cuban researcher José Luis Juanes on beach erosion and beach recovery policies in the Caribbean.
The fair associated with the congress, EXPOMAR, was also opened at the Havana Conventions Center, with 18 stands belonging to national and international entities dedicated to marine science research and education.
The objective of the event will be to contribute to the knowledge and maintenance of biodiversity, as well as promote theoretical and practical exchange in scientific and educational work to promote sustainable development, said Maria de los Angeles Serrano Jerez, president of the Organizing Committee, in the opening speech.
José Fidel Santana, vice-minister of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, acknowledged that more and more countries are concerned about the progressive deterioration of the environment and the danger of life on earth.
MarCuba 2018 will be in session until October 19, and will be the space for the presentation of 270 Cuban and 167 foreign scientific and academic works.
