HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 28 (acn) Cubans Osleni Guerrero and Taymara Oropesa advanced to the quarterfinals of the 5th International Badminton Tournament of Guatemala, which takes place at the Teodoro Palacio Flores Gymnasium, where they try to gain points to their qualification to the Pan American Games of Lima 2019.
In the individual men´s event, Guerrero beat 2-0 (21-9 and 21-16) the local Daniel Dieguez to then defeat 2-1 (15-21, 21-12 and 21-8) Brazilian Jonathan Matias in the second round and today he will face Peruvian Daniel La Torre.
If winning today, Guerrero should clash with the first seed of the tournament, local Kevin Cordon, Pan-Am and Central American monarch, who beat him last week in the Mexico Open.
The Cuban woman Oropesa was bye in the first round and then won 2-0 (21-15 and 21-16) over Canadian Eliana Zhang and her rival today is the also local Nikte Sotomayor.
The young Cuban girl was the champion of the Mexican Open by defeating in the final the then defending monarch, American Jennie Gai, who didn´t attend this contest, but the first seed of the women´s event is another American, Discha Gupta, bye in the first round and victimizer of Guatemalan Mariana Paiz in the second one.
The two other Cubans registered in the individual events were eliminated as the man Leodannis Martinez won 2-0 over Dominican Yonatan Linares, but then lost 0-2 to American Timothy Lam, while the girl Yeily Ortiz lost 1-2 in her debut to Peruvian Ines Castillo.
The latter joined Guerrero in the mixed doubles and beat 2-0 (21-11 and 21-17) Brazilians Matheus Voigt and Luana Vicente, and in the second round they will rival the Canadian pair of Jonathan Bing Tsan Lai and Katie Ho -Shueung.
These four Cuban players will also attend the men's and women's doubles, events in which they intend to make it better than in Mexico, where they were eliminated in the second round.
Last year at the Guatemala Open, Martinez and Oropesa won the mixed doubles; were runners-up in the single events in their respective sexes, while Guerrero was bronze medalist in the men´s single after losing in semifinals to Cordon, who then beat Martinez in the final.
