Cuban President to address UN for the first time

Cuban President to address UN for the first timeHAVANA, Cuba, Sep 24 (ACN) The President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Miguel Diaz-Canel, will speak this Monday for the first time in the sessions of the Peace Summit, convened by the United Nations to pay tribute to the South African leader Nelson Mandela.

This will be the Cuban President's first intervention in the multilateral organization, in which he will also take part next September 26 in the day dedicated to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

The Cuban head of state's intense agenda includes a meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, as well as bilateral meetings with leaders from other countries.

To commemorate on September 26, the 58th anniversary of Fidel's historic presentation at the General Assembly, Díaz-Canel will hold a meeting with friends of Cuba at the Riverside Church in Harlem, where the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution was welcomed in 1960.

Diaz-Canel arrived in New York on Sunday accompanied by a large delegation of ministers and officials, and upon his arrival he told the press that he is taking his country's voice to the UN to "denounce the aberrant policy of the blockade" imposed by the United States on the island more than 55 years ago.
