An Encounter with History during the Summer Months

GUANTANAMO, Cuba, Jul 16 (ACN) Workers at the Major General Pedro Agustin Perez Home-Museum, celebrating its 5th anniversary, is working on teaching the new generation local and national history this summer.

The summer program has been designed to strengthen the center's community work involving a large number of organizations and institutions, especially the surrounding schools, said the Director of the Museum, Alejandro Jardines Almarales.

The specialist told ACN that they began the summer program in June, with the most attractive element which are visits to relevant places of historic heritage in the province, especially tied to the life of the highest ranking independence leader in the region of Guantanamo in the struggle against Spanish colonialism.

Among some of the visits are a trip to the San Pedro de la Roca Castle in the city of Santiago de Cuba, complex that is a World Heritage Site and where Pedro Agustin Perez escaped after being taken prisoner in 1879, said Jardines Almarales.

Activities commemorating important historic dates have been programed during the months of July and August,, like July 26th anniversary of the attacks against the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Cespedes Garrisons; August 4th, Day of the Martyrs of Guantanamo and August 23 rd, anniversary of the Federation of Cuban Women.

The Historian of the city, Jose Sanchez Guerra said that since the inauguration of the museum by the then First Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel five years ago, the center has carried out important work in research and promotion of the life of the illustrious land of Guantanamo.

He also expressed that the institution has turned into an important part of the cultural life of the city thanks to work of the workers in the protection of the heritage that it treasures.

The Major General Pedro Agustin Perez Home-Museum was inhabited by the independence leader since 1904 until his death on April 13th, 1014 when he was about to celebrate his 70th birthday.
