Cuba Reiterates its Support to Human Rights

Cuba Reiterates its Support to Human RightsHAVANA, Cuba, Jul 3 (ACN) Cuba reiterated its support to human rights after submitting to the UN Universal Periodic Review of the Council underway in Geneva, Switzerland, reported Prensa Latina News Agency.

Cuban representative Pablo Berti said that an example of its commitment with the UN mechanism is always willing to demonstrate its interest in the compliance to the established UN norms.

While speaking during the 39th ordinary sessions of the UN Human rights Council the Cuban diplomat called all countries to continue working for the consolidation of the achievements and outcome of the Council, which has demonstrated being useful and effective.

He said that one can question its success, despite the selectivity and politicizing issues in the treatment of human rights enthroned more and more in the work of the Council.

Berti reiterated there are concerns in attempts to reduce the UPR's main bases and added that obtaining better efficiency of the Council cannot be used to eliminate the inter-governmental character of the Review under any concept.

The Cuban representative urged for concerns of the States to be taken into account and strictly comply with what is established in the package of institutional construction.

The universality of the mechanism is essential, as well as the equitable treatment of all the UN members to support an objective and periodic review in a mutual respectful and cooperation atmosphere, he said.
