Tribute to Antonio Maceo in Santiago de CubaSANTIAGO DE CUBA, Jun 14 (ACN) The Antonio Maceo Studies Center in the Eastern city of Santiago de Cuba paid tribute on Thursday to the Independence leader on the 173rd anniversary of his birth.

Before a bust in his honor at the Avenue of Libertadores, the specialist of the institute, Victor Manuel Pulles, highlighted the greatness of the ideas and patriotic action, courageous and intransigent example of his struggle against Spanish colonialism.

He also dedicated some words to Commander Ernesto Che Guevara who was also born on the same date of the independence leader 90 years ago. He praised the two men's dimension of bracing an idea and shedding their blood to defend the cause.

Schoolchildren and teachers from the July 26th School Complex, combatants of the Revolution and workers of the Provincial Cultural Heritage Office also participated in the activity.

Different institutions from Santiago de Cuba placed floral wreaths before the bust of the Major General of the Liberation Army.

The workers of the Antonio Maceo Studies Center also recalled the date before the sculpture by artist Alberto Lescay, dedicated to the independence hero.

The Science Forum was held during the day, as part of Santiago Culture Week where works by renowned figures of history and art of the city was exposed.

A political-cultural vigil is to be held on Thursday night at the Home now museum and National Monument in the former Providencia Street, today Los Maceo where he was born on June 14th, 1845.
