Thousands of People Protected in Villa ClaraSANTA CLARA, Villa Clara, May 29 (ACN) Over 24 thousand people remain evacuated in Villa Clara province, mainly in homes of family members, friends and evacuation centers due to the persistent rains in their residential areas.

The Vice Presdient of the Provincial Administration Council, Jose Luis Napoles told ACN that the majority of the evacuations were to residents of the municipalities of Santo Domingo, Sagua la Grande, Encrucijada and Santa Clara.

He commented that the persistence and constant rains in the 13 municipalities, together with the overflow of the 10 reservoirs in the territory provoked many areas to be without communication.

The provincial official added that residents were transferred to safer grounds before the overflow of rivers and mudslides in the Guamuhaya Mountains, provoking 10 communities to be without communication.

The people in evacuation centers were provided with then necessary resources and means including food and health services, he said.

The Directive explained that once the weather conditions in the province improve and there are no life threatening danger, the population will return to their homes.

Napoles recalled the need to increase the proper handling of the food, treat water for human consumption in order to avoid stomach ailments at this moment.

The President of the Protection of the Population Commission in the town of Caibarien, Mariela Villareal told the press that they had activated three centers to receive the over one hundred people that were evacuated.

He added that some 600 people were taken to the homes of their family or friends in case of possible flooding, collapse or a lack of communication in some areas.

The rural areas that were mostly affected were Reforma, Dolores and Rojas, Refugio and low-lying areas, he said.

The official recognized the quick work in the protection of the basic food basket in different stores in Caibarien in addition to protecting the food in warehouses in the agricultural entities of the municipality.
