Program to Protect the Bay of HolguinHOLGUIN, Cuba, May 9 (ACN) The Fuel Commercial Company, CUPET, in Holguin contributes in the protection of the bays through a cleanup program in favor of the ecosystems as part of the action called Tarea Vida (Work towards Life).

The specialist of environmental management of the entity, Nerida Pena, said that the actions is centered in the Bay of Nipe, the largest inlet pocket in Cuba located in the municipality of Antilla and one of the prioritized sites within the conservation of the biodiversity projects.

He highlighted that the main activities include the deactivation of tanks and conductors destined for the transportation of fuel in the Felton Base Company currently not in use.

Pena pointed out that these connectors can damage the ecosystem and are currently being eliminated taking into account the complexity of the process and the high cost of investment.

CUPET, said the specialist, is also inserted in the reforestation of the mangroves, indispensable to minimize the increase of the sea level, saline intrusion and other consequences associated with climate change.

The company has its installations in the south industrial zone, located close to the main city and prioritize treatment of dangerous wastes like oil residues, highly harmful for the environment, he said.

As part of the protection program of the bays, activities are also underway in Holguin in environmental education in communities close to the sites, among them drawing, story and poetry contests, audiovisuals and conferences.
