Cuba's System against Climate Change Characterized as Unique

HAVANA, Cuba, May 7 (ACN) The representative of the World Food Program in Cuba, Laura Melo characterized on Monday in Havana the island risk management and adaptation to climate change as unique.

Cuba has a considerable institutional capacity to confront a natural phenomenon, among them hurricanes and droughts, said the expert.

The fact that Cuba is hit by hurricanes and affected by droughts makes the island different from other nations due to its response mechanism, which are an example for not only Latin America and the Caribbean but also the world.

She added that the application of good practices by the National Civil Defense of the Meteorological Institute and other centers strengthens what constitutes an articulated task and shares its experiences with other nations.

The expert mentioned a meeting in 2014 in the Dominican Republic and Haiti where an action plan was drafted to increase the potential against meteorological events on the basis of specific predictions.

The specialist spoke on Monday at Havana's Convention Center during a seminar for Cuba Day with the presence of representatives to the 37 th period of sessions of ECLAC, which will begin on Tuesday.

The event which was held on Monday as a prelude to the ECLAC event was called From Cuba to the World, Contributions to South-South Cooperation as an example of how to promote integration of environmental sustainability, risk management of disasters and adapting to climate change.
