Secretary General of the United Nations to Visit Cuba

Secretary General of the United Nations to Visit CubaHAVANA, Cuba, May 4 (ACN) The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres is scheduled to visit Cuba May 7th and 8 th.

According to Friday's Cubaminrex website, the distinguished visitor will hold official talks with Cuban authorities and will participate in the inaugural ceremony of the 37th Period of Sessions of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC/CEPAL in Spanish).

Antonio Guterres, is the 9th UN Secretary General since he assumed the position on January 1st, 2017 replacing Ban Ki-moon.

However, this is not the first time that Cuba welcomes a high-ranking UN official.

Ki-moon traveled to Havana on June of 2016 to participate in the signing of the Peace Accords between the Colombian government and the FARC-EP, in which he highlighted Cuba's role in the process.

He also traveled to the Caribbean island in 2014 with the main objective of taking part in the Second Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

Cuba, as founding member of the UN since its creation in 1945, has remained in the world body on the principles in supporting peace and international security, respect to human rights and the cooperation and search of solutions of different issues facing the world.

The previous period of sessions of CEPAL was held in May of 2016 in Mexico City and was centered in the challenges of the transition sine the Objectives in the Development of the Millennium and Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.
