Debates Underway on How to Make the Land more Productive

HAVANA, Cuba, May 2 (ACN) The representatives of the International Congress on Soil which began on Wednesday in Havana centered their discussions on the projection of the science of the soil in Cuba to achieve highly production land and whose practices favor the environment.

The Director of the Institute of the Land, Luis Gomez Jorrin said at the Convention Center that among the main challenges associated with the improvement of the soil is strengthening the conservation policies and promotion of the principles of the Conservation Agriculture.

He commented that for the idea to become sustainable there must be a minimum of disturbance of the soil in addition to a rotating system for the cultivations.

Regarding the challenges related with the nutrition of the plants, the also President of the Cuban Society of Science of the Soil, insisted in the need to increase the yield per unit of cultivated area, obtain more efficiency in agronomy and increase the rational use of the water.

Gomez Jorrin added that from the incorporation of the harvest residues and the introduction of the principles of the Conservation Agriculture, Agro ecology and the lines and variety of tolerant and resistant plants to high temperatures, salinity and drought they will be able to ease the impact of climate change in the country.

The specialist valued the importance in integrating the results to other fields like Agronomy, Plant physiology, Climatology, Water, Medical Sciences, Economy and Sociology aimed at promoting conservation of natural resources and taking advantage of its potential.

The International Congress on the Soil will run until Friday with the participation of 300 specialists from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Spain, Mexico, Venezuela and Cuba. They will debate issues linked to genesis, classification and evaluation of the lands and the impact of climate change and degradation of the surfaces.

The event includes nine symposiums divided in sustainable management of the land, computer science and management integrated of the land, nuclear techniques in agriculture and the contribution of international projects.
