Cuban Environmental and Health Strategy

HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 24 (ACN) Representatives from several nations participating in the 3rd International Cuba Health 2018 Convention, learned on Wednesday in Havana on the actions underway on the island to achieve better indicators and develop them amidst environmental challenges.

A symposium on Environmental Health and Sustainable Development held at one of the halls of the Convention Center in Havana served for PhD Susana Suarez Tamayo, Director of the Epidemiology and Environmental Health Center of the National Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology Institute to speak on the issue.

After warning that four parts of the infant mortality in the world is due to environmental programs, the specialist pointed out that the situation is worse in nations and vulnerable groups or communities where there is a high rate of social and economic inequality.

She mentioned the quality of water and air, mitigation measures and adapting to climate change, management of residues and the safe management of chemical products like objectives related with the environment. That is why it is important to advance in the follow up or control of human health and development of the countries.

Suarez Tamayo said that with Cuba in particular, the environmental problems is centered in climate change, salinization of the soil, water contamination, deforestation, natural disasters and environmental hygiene and for each one there is a plan in the reduction of its impact.

She expressed that although the island complied in 2015 with the majority of its goals contemplated in the Millennium Development Objectives, through the guideline of the economic and social policy, an updating process has been promoted as well as internal transformations that are aligned with the priorities of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.

The expert from the National Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology Institute mentioned that among the challenges for the island is the improvement of its economy and housing, amidst drought and the deterioration of its soils to achieve food security and reducing the effects of climate change.

She highlighted the support of the United Nations through its 19 funds, agencies and programs in the national and local efforts in favor of the development of the country and well-being of its population and pointed out that they will continue working with international cooperation without abandoning its principals of solidarity and shared responsibility.
