Wildfire destroys 2000 acres of forest in western CubaHAVANA, Cuba, Mar 9 (ACN) A large wildfire that started last March 5 in the Guanes municipality in the Cuban westernmost province of Pinar del Rio was finally contained after it burnt close to 2,000 acres of forest.

According to the El Guerrillero newspaper, the joint action of the fire brigade and ranger corps, the Ministry of the Interior, the Civil Defense and other agencies prevented the spread of flames.

Initially the fire, which began in the afternoon of 5 March, spread due to the elevated temperature and lack of humidity, as well as the speed of the winds prevailing in this wooded territory.

However, the quick and decisive work of the task force assigned to the area made it possible to control the fire and avoid major evils.

Specialized forces and means continue to work on the periphery of the fire and elimination of the last outbreaks, with the aim of achieving their total extinction in the shortest possible time.
