HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 26 (ACN) Cuba will host the 37th Period of Sessions of the Economic Commission for Latin America and Caribbean (CEPAL), the most important biannual meeting of the regional entity, to be held from May 7th to the 11th in Havana.
Its Executive Secretary, Alicia Barcena made the announcement during her meeting with Cuba's Foreign Trade and Investment Minister, Rodrigo Malmierca in Santiago de Chile.
According to CubaMinrex website, the members of CEPAL agreed that their next meeting was to be held in Cuba during the conclusion of its 36th period of sessions held May 23rd to the 27th, 2016 in Mexico.
During the Havana meeting, the regional entity will present a report on its activities and will urge the governments to reflect on the advances of the development strategies in the context of the commitments of the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Objectives.
Malmierca said that it is important for our country to host the CEPAL period of sessions as a good opportunity to advance in an analysis on the important development issues in the region.
Meanwhile, Alicia Barcena pointed out that the meeting will prioritize the idea and need of equality in Latin America and the Caribbean in tune with the work of its four previous sessions held in 2010 in Brasilia, 2012 San Salvador, 2015 Lima and 2016 in Mexico.
The UN representative said that we will maintain the issue of equality as the center of our proposals and highlight the importance in ending with the culture of privilege as a central condition to advance towards sustainable development.
CEPAL's period of sessions is the most important inter-governmental meeting in terms of orienting the work of the UN regional commission and which proposes a forum to analyze the most relevant issues for economic and social development of the regional countries and examine the progress of activities.
