Explosion of the USS Maine Remembered in HavanaHAVANA, Cuba, Feb 25 (ACN) The explosion of the USS Maine in the Port of Havana was remembered on Thursday in the Cuban capital with an activity in the presence of authorities and representatives of the Cuban people after 120 years of that tragic incident.

This event, occurred on February 15th, 1898, was used by the US as a pretext to frustrate Cuba's independence and declare war against Spain and thus inflicting the Spanish-Cuban-American war.

The President of the Cuban History Institute Rene Gonzalez, who headed the activity held at the Monument to the USS Maine recalled how the incident in the history of the United States proliferated excuses to inflict an armed confrontation.

He said that today there are many excuses and ways in attacking the Revolution and only the resistance of the Cuban people and the diplomatic excellence of the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro impeded a direct armed aggression against Cuba.

According to Gonzalez, affirmed that US imperialism will never forgive the example of the sovereign Cuban people.

The specialist said that the trail on the suspicious explosion of the USS Maine dates further back, when at the end of 1897 the US press, apparent solidarity with the cause of Cuba's independence, demonizing Captain General Valeriano Weyler and called out for the military intervention of the US in the war against Cuba and Spain.
