Cuba and Spain Sign a Memorandum of Understanding on Justice

Cuba and Spain Sign a Memorandum of Understanding on JusticeHAVANA, Cuba, Jan 22 (ACN) Cuba's Justice Minister Maria Esther Reus Gonzalez and her Spanish counterpart Rafael Catala signed on Monday in Havana a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation.

Both Justice Ministers signed the document in the El Laguito Protocol Hall with the presence of the Secretary of the Council of State Homero Acosta Alvarez and Spanish Ambassador to Cuba, Juan Jose Buitrago de Benito.

The text establishes that the objective of the document is to facilitate cooperation, contributing to development and harmonizing public policies, norms and procedures about law in general.

Our objective is to improve ties of these types between both States and the addition of other elements, among them, the improvement of civil registries and legislative reforms to contribute to the application of quality justice, said Catala Polo.

He stressed that both sides adopted the agreement to create a working group in consular issues.

Reus Gonzalez agreed with her counterpart in that the memorandum of understanding constitutes an extra space to the already traditional Cuban-Spanish contacts, above all, because the two institutions are undergoing an updating process in common issues.

She mentioned the registry and notary systems in which both sides have similar positions, in the traditional legal tradition that allows the opening of new areas, among them, the computerization of the services.

The Cuban Justice Minister pointed out that the fact that Cuba is a tourism destination for Spain and the European nation a preferred region for Cubans, it is perfectly possible to guarantee safety for the citizens of each country.

She also urged for major exchanges of specialists, training of professionals in legislative and notary registries.

Spanish Justice Minister, Rafael Catala Polo arrived last Saturday in Havana to carry out an official visit until next Monday.
