HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 5 (ACN) Cuban president Raúl Castro Ruz presides over the central event for the 60th anniversary of the popular armed uprising of September 5, 1957 against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.
He is accompanied by Miguel Díaz-Canel, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and First Vice-President of the Councils of State and Ministers, and Lidia Esther Brunet Nodarse, member of the Central Committee of the PCC and its first secretary in the province of Cienfuegos.
In the Jose Martí Park of the city, where there were several scenarios of the insurrection that day, the population of Cienfuegos concentrated from very early hours to pay tribute to the heroes and martyrs of the deed.
After the event, a pilgrimage will take place to the Tomás Acea cemetery, where the remains of those fallen in the uprising rest.
Six decades ago, members of the 26 de Julio movement and young people with revolutionary ideas, members of the Navy, along with the people of the city carried out the uprising of September 5.
