CIEGO DE AVILA, Cuba, Aug 11 (acn) Agriculture Minister Gustavo Rodriguez Rollero, urged on Friday in Ciego de Avila to carry out a sowing and harvest campaign for the winter season that runs from September to March.
Leaders of the sector analyzed all the production programs during a meeting with the objective of countering the effects of the drought and maintain the levels of the territory which is characterized for its large harvests and economic efficiency.
The agricultural leader pointed out that the plantations must be integrated with areas that have conditions for specific irrigation systems in addition to the quality of the seeds.
Rodriguez highlighted the commitment of the state and cooperative-campesino producers who plan to generate no less than 15 thousand hectares of root vegetables, cereals, green vegetables, citrus and fruit trees during the winter season.
During the debate among technicians and directors of the companies, he pointed out the availability of the machinery, preparation of the land, necessary seeds, chemical and natural compost in the over 8 thousand agro-ecological farms in the territory.
The representative of the provincial Agriculture office, Orlando Perez Pedreira expressed that coffee and cocoa sowing has been in process since last year with the contribution of the forest entity, while the municipality of Venezuela will begin to exploit 4 thousand hectares that was practically not in use.
He added that there is a plan to increase the area of guavas which are the fruit hardest hit by the prolonged drought and very important for the preserves industries and small factories.
Ciego de Avila produced 200 thousand tons of food in the first 7 months of the year, superior to what was predicted, meanwhile the workers made the commitment to double the figure by the end of the year despite having 777 water pumping station out of circulation.
State workers and campesinos are already preparing the soil for the winter season and among the priorities are tomatoes, whose upcoming harvest must reach 60 thousand tons t supply the agriculture industries and also the food business.
