HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 2 (acn) The Cuban women´s duo of Lidiannis Echeverria-Leila Martinez got two wins over Colombian and Russian duets in the continuation of the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships running in Vienna, Austria, until next Sunday.
After suffering two losses in a row in Group B, Echeverria and Martinez defeated 2-0 (21-16 and 21-14) Colombians Andrea Galindo-Claudia Gorda, and Russia's Eketerina Bilova-Nadezda Makroguzova also 2-0 (21-14 and 21-19).
According to the website of the contest, Martinez was the top scorer of the two games, with 19 and 22 points, in that order.
Meanwhile, Daisel Quesada-Karell Peña, a Cuban men´s pair, suffered its third consecutive loss in group D when falling 0-2 (15-21 and 20-22) to the Dutch team of Christian Varenhorst-Marten Van Garderen.
On the other hand, the other Cuban men´s duo made up by Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez, 24th seed in the contest, finished first in their group when beating 2-1 (17-21, 21-15, 15-10) Brazil´s top-seeded Saymon Barbosa and Alvaro Filho in a 45-minute Pool A match.
Thus, Diaz and Gonzalez headed unbeaten their group with 3 wins and no loss and advanced to the round of 32, which starts on Thursday, as top seed.
In the history of these competitions, this is only the second-time that the top-seeded pair was defeated in the preliminary rounds.
Echeverria and Martinez also reached this stage while Quesada and Peña were already eliminated.
