Artemisa, Cuba, Jul 17 (ACN) The Juan Rius Rivera Solidarity with Cuba Brigade, arrived on Monday to Havana's Julio Antonio Mella International Camp where they paid tribute to Puerto Rican Revolutionary Independence fighter Julio Vives.
Before the plaque in his memory, the over 60 brigadistas offered a minute of applause as a different way of remembering the man that gave his life for Puerto Rico's independence and supported the solidarity cause of Cuba and sustained struggle of its leader Fidel Castro.
The representative of the Puerto Rican Mission to Cuba, Edwin Gonzalez, highlighted the internationalist qualities of Vives, whose ashes, responding to his last will and testament, were spread around the international camp, home to world solidarity.
Maria Esther and Cristina, two of his six children, mentioned that being in Cuba is like breathing freedom, something that was good for his father and that is why they have also joined the Independence movement in Puerto Rico.
The President of the Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, ICAP, Fernando Gonzalez Llort mentioned other Puerto Rican revolutionaries, among them, Oscar Lopez Rivera, released from prison thanks to international solidarity after spending 36 years in a US cell.
He said that new victories will come for the Puerto Rican people and they will always have the support of their Cuban brothers and sisters.
The 26th Edition of the Juan Rius Rivera Brigade will carry out a program of activities until August 1st. They will visit places of historic interests and community centers in the provinces of Havana, Matanzas, Artemisa and Villa Clara and will visit the Ernesto Che Guevara Memorial in Santa Clara in tribute to the 50th anniversary of his fall in combat.
