President of Gabon Pays Tribute to Jose Marti

Havana, Cuba, Jul 7 (ACN) The President of the Republic of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondimba, paid tribute on Friday to Cuba's National Hero Jose Marti (1853-1895) at the Memorial in Revolution Square.

As part of his official visit, the Gabonese Head of State placed a floral wreath before the monument that perpetrates the memory of the Cuban independence leader.

Accompanied by Cuba's Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra, the African leader toured the Memorial, site that treasures the valuable documented materials on the life and work of Jose Marti.

According to his official program, Bongo Ondimba will hold talks with Cuban President Raul Castro.

As part of his Friday scheduled, the Gabonese President also paid tribute to prominent political and independence leaders of the African continent, at the Park of African Forefathers in Old Havana.

The Head of State thanked Cuba "not only for its permanent interest in Africa and its history, but also because of its participation in our future".

The President of Gabon met on Friday with the President of the Cuban Parliament Esteban Lazo and participated in a bilateral business forum with the objective of expanding commercial and economic ties with the island.

This is Bongo Ondimba's second official visit to Cuba; the first was in September of 2012.

Cuba and the Republic of Gabon established diplomatic relations in 1974, ties that include collaboration in the health, education and sports sectors.

Gabon is located in the Atlantic Coast of Central Africa and is the fifth major oil producer in Africa and one of the first exporter of manganese in the world.
