Havana, Cuba, Jun 3 (ACN) Cuba's Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, Elba Rosa Perez Montoya said on Monday in Havana that Cuba maintains close attention to environmental issues despite the US economic, financial and commercial blockade against the island.
During the opening of the 11th International Convention on Environment and Development held at Havana's Convention Center, the Cuban official said that the country prioritizes the formation of human resources, consolidates research and contributes in its results for the adoption of important decisions.
Perez Montoya spoke to 690 representatives and guests from 31 countries, including Cuba with the presence of Commander of the Revolution, Guillermo Frias and other Cuban and foreign figures.
She mentioned the FAO report that reveals that it will be difficult to end hunger by 2030 because humanity's capacity to feed itself is in danger due to an increase in inequality, growing pressures on natural resources and the impact of climate change.
However, she stressed that Cuba maintains its principles of equality and rights, its international battle for justice, peace and special attention to the protection and conservation of the environment without renouncing to its development.
The Cuban Minister gave the example of last April's approval of the State Plan by the Executive Committee of the Council of Ministers to confront climate change, which she characterized as a new example of political commitment and importance the Cuban government gives to the protection of the environment.
A colloquium on the thinking of the leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro constituted the first scientific session of the participants to the event, in allusion to his vision on the depletion of natural resources, environmental contamination and the need to prepare to face the problem.
The 11th International Convention on Environment and Development will run until Friday with six congresses, three symposiums and two colloquiums in addition to an exhibition fair of products and services.
