Cuba Reaffirms Its Support of Refugees

Havana, Cuba, Jun 20 (ACN) Cuba reaffirmed on Tuesday in Havana its support and protection of refugees with a growth tendency in recent years due to conflicts on the occasion of World Refugee Day.

Dennis Casares, specialist at the Foreign Ministry explained that although Cuba has not signed the Convention Relating on the Status of Refugees, Article 3 of its Constitution states "concede asylum to any person that is persecuted for its ideals or struggles for democratic rights".

During a panel at the headquarters of the Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU) in Havana, he stressed that Cuba has a broad human tradition and gives protection to members of social movements, national liberation and victims of armed conflicts.

The Foreign Ministry expert added that it is a priority for the Caribbean nation to eradicate the causes that provoke the wave of migrants and displaced, eliminate exclusive policies and promotes international cooperation to discuss challenges related to the issue.

Maria de los Angeles Varona, Human Rights specialist at the Red Cross said that there is a group of refugees on the island that receive free health care services and education, in addition to offering them different opportunities to join society.

Sharing his vision on the issue, Dr. Celestino Pino pointed out that an international consensus is needed to eliminate the mistaken view towards refugees, generally considered by foreign powers as though they were a threat to their national security.

The United Nations established World Refugee Day on June 20th, 2001, date preceding the Convention Relating the Status of Refugees with over five decades of existence.
