Cuba Celebrates World Environment Day with Good ResultsSancti Spiritus, Cuba, Jun 5 (acn) World Environment Day was celebrated on Monday in the province of Sancti Spiritus with comprehensive results in favor of environment sustainability and preservation with the presence of Commanders of the Revolution Ramiro Valdes and Guillermo Garcia.

Cuba's committment in assuring a free, clean and sustainable environment was reaffirmed by Vice President Ramiro Valdes who presided over the main activity along with Guillermo Garcia President of the Protection of the Flora and Fauna Center.

Ramiro Valdez received the National Environment Award in the category of political, grass roots or non-governmental organizations. Ramiro Valdez was also recognized for his revolutionary merits, among them the multiple work in favor of the environment and work carried out and inspired by Fidel Castro's concept of Water Commitment.

The Project, Architecture, and Engineering Companies of Villa Cara and the DIMARQ Engineering and Design in Ciego de Avila were also awarded.

Dr. Joaquin Catasus Guerra was recognized for his over 40 years of research on biological diversity.

During the celebration, the province of Sancti Spiritus received a special recognition from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) for complying in environmental strategies, above all in the fight against contamination, rational management of natural resources and its policy in addition to facing climate change.

Meanwhile, the territories of Villa Clara, Cienfuegos and Ciego de Avila were granted the condition of outstanding provinces.

Leonel Diaz Camero, representative of CITMA in Sancti Spiritus highlighted the leading role of the scientific sector and several production and service companies in obtaining a special recognition for the third consecutive time. Sancti Spiritus was also the site of the main activity for World Environment Day in 2008 and 2013.

Diaz Camero stressed the impact of the province on the research on climate change in the mitigation and adaption in the coastal areas and its coral reefs, protection of sandy beaches and in particular in the tourism infrastructure in the Ancon peninsula.

He also mentioned the fight against illegalities, saline intrusion in rice cultivation, canal cleanup and planting resistant varieties to the mixture of seawater with that of underground water, basic crops for the population among them beans and corn.
