Resolution on the US Blockade against Cuba Approved at ACP

Havana, Cuba, May 9 (acn) The Council of Ministers of the Group of Asia, Caribbean and Pacific States approved a resolution on Tuesday condemning the US economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba, reported Prensa Latina News Agency.

In the last session held recently in Belgium, the ACP group recalled the declaration on the issue in its 6th Summit of Heads of State and Government.

The text condemns the use of unilateral cohesive measures against certain developing nations with the objective of impeding those countries from exercising its right to determine its own political, economic and social systems, indicated a communique of the Cuban embassy in Brussels.

The text also rejected the application of unilateral and extraterritorial measures and legislations that violate international law, like the Helms-Burton Law.

The approved resolution expressed concern that the extraterritorial nature of the blockade also impedes Cuba in complying with its financial obligations with the ACP group.

The members requested the General Secretary to work in facilitating Havana to comply with its obligations as a member of the group.
The Cuban delegation present in the session denounced the decision of the ING Bank, where the Group's Secretariat has its accounts, of not accepting payment made by Cuba, said the diplomatic note.

The island's representation rejected this new demonstration of punitive actions against the country as a result of the extraterritorial nature of the blockade, a position that revived the solidarity of several member states.

According to the communique, since Cuba's incorporation to the ACP group in 1999, the island has honored its financial obligations, as an expression of solidarity and commitment with its member nations.
