International Community will Condemn Foreign Military Bases in Guantanamo

Guantanamo, Cuba, Apr 28 (acn) The city of Guantanamo will host the International Seminar on Peace and the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases, from May 4th to the 6th.

Some 180 researchers and activists from 25 countries will participate in the event to be held in Guantanamo where the US has an illegal military base since 1903 against the will of the Cuban people.

Ana Teresa Napoles, provincial representative of the Institute of Friendship among the Peoples, (ICAP) pointed out that this year's event will have a larger foreign participation mainly from the United States.

About a dozen students from different countries among them Argentina and Colombia studying medicine in Guantanamo are also victims of the presence of military bases in their countries.

The event will session in the context of the normalization of relations between Cuba and the United States –one of the demands of the Cuban government and people is the return of the occupied territory in Guantanamo-, and amidst imperialism's new offensive and Latin American oligarchies against several of the political and social processes in the continent.

The opening of the seminar will be held on May 4th at the School of Medicine's theater and will have the participation of Silvio Platero Yrola, President of the Cuban Movement for Peace and Sovereignty of the Peoples, and Maria Do Socorro Gomes, president of the World Peace Council, sponsoring the event.

Several works will be debated during the sessions and the program will include artistic galas, book presentations, documentaries, visits to cultural and historic sites and meetings with the authorities in the territory and several Committees in Defense of the Revolution.

The seminar's final declaration will be signed and made public during a visit to the municipality of Caimanera, which has a third of its area surrounded by the US military base, in violation of international law and considered dangerous to the nation's integration and sovereignty.

Prior to the event, the International Solidarity Encounter will also be held in Guantanamo on May 2nd.
