Holguin, Cuba, Apr 25 (acn) The Provincial Health system in the province of Holguin will incorporate three new senior citizens homes this year as part of the programs aimed at improving the quality of life of this sector of the Cuban population.
These centers, whose installations are currently undergoing a reparation process will be located in Buenaventura, in the municipality of Calixto Garcia, Baguano and San Andres, said Dr. Barbara Lucas, head of the care of senior citizens.
With the new installations, a total of 21 homes will be available in the eastern territory where over 600 senior will be benefited with the service, she said.
The initiative was part of the process in face of the country's aging of the population whose statistics places Holguin among the top provinces with people over 60 years of age with a rate superior to 17 percent.
Rebeca Robles, specialist in the sector's provincial office pointed out that another four senior homes will be repaired to improve in comfort and eliminate existing architectural barriers.
The specialist added that these conditions will allow the slow application of the new tariffs established by the Ministry of Finances and Prices with a fixed rate of between 180 and 400 Cuban pesos which will be partially or totally assumed by social assistance, only in the cases where the beneficiaries or their family cannot afford to pay.
There are community projects and activities in Young Computer Clubs in Holguin where there are over 180 thousand senior citizens to foment the practice of physical exercises and cultural education.
The program on the attention of senior citizens in Cuba began in 1974 and it is divided in community, institutional and hospital assistance destined to satisfy the psychological, medical and socio economic needs.
