Tribute to Raul Roa on the 110th Anniversary of his Birth

Tribute to Raul Roa on the 110th Anniversary of his BirthHavana, Cuba, Apr 18 (acn) Raul Roa, known as the "Foreign Minister of Dignity", was honored on Tuesday in Havana on the 110th anniversary of his birth.

Family and friends placed a floral wreath, symbol of respect and admiration for his great intellect and loyal revolutionary of Cuba's sovereignty, before a bust in his memory at the headquarters of the Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU).

Fermin Quinones, Director of the ACNU, remembered Raul Roa who denounced before the United Nations 56 years ago the mercenary invasion of the Bay of Pigs and other US maneuvers against the Caribbean island.

Quinones also commented that the "Foreign Minister of Dignity" constitutes the link between the 1930 Revolution and the triumph in 1959 guided by the historic leader Fidel Castro.

Referring to the work of Roa, Ricardo Alarcon de Quesada emphasized that the figure of the wise writer, polemist and politician is indispensable for the study of the new generations, "not only for his intellectual production, but for his example of combativeness and revolutionary dignity".

The current dangers against peace and integration in Latin America and the Caribbean makes us go back to the thinking and attitude of Raul Roa, said Alarcon.

During the tribute to the Foreign Minister of Dignity, participants exchanged anecdotes and experiences together with Roa, while the President of the Press Commission of the ACNU Pedro Martinez Pirez characterized the renowned diplomat as a unique human being whose figure still shines in the history of the region.

He also highlighted the validity of his thinking, especially before OAS attempts to destabilize the current legitimate government of Venezuela.

Raul Roa was born on April 18th, 1907, in the Havana neighborhood of La Vibora. He was named Cuba's ambassador to the Organization of American States, (OAS) at the triumph of the Revolution; later he was designated Foreign Minister and the island's representative to the United Nations where he won crucial battles in defense of the country, actions that granted him the name "Foreign Minister of Dignity".
