Earthquake in Guantanamo and Santiago de CubaSantiago de Cuba, Cuba, Apr 11 (acn) An earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale shook Cuba's southeastern municipalities of Caimanera in Guantanamo and Santiago de Cuba provinces on Tuesday afternoon without material damages or human loses reported.

This is the 7th tremor this year located 70 kilometers southwest of city of Caimanera and a depth of 34 kilometers, according to the National Seismology Research Center (CENAIS) in Santiago de Cuba.

Enrique Arango Arias, Technical deputy director of the institution expressed that there is no connection between this tremor and the earthquake that measured 5.8 on January 17th with an epicenter close to the town of Uvero in Santiago de Cuba.

The eastern region received some 40 tremors the same date last year including a series of earthquakes, that lasted over one month since January 17th, 2016, he said.

CENAIS continues to strengthen is early warning system, which grew last year to date with seven new stations totaling 20 of the installations so far, three of which transmits information via Internet for an international network.

The specialist said that they will soon place an Accelerograph Network purchased for the city of Santiago de Cuba and some areas of Granma and Guantanamo provinces, which will allow better surveys and decisions in case help is needed with a strong earthquake.
