Stability in the Production of Vegetables in Villa Clara

Santa Clara, Cuba, Apr 11 (acn) Stability and discipline in the work of urban and suburban agriculture of Villa Clara is to finish its first trimester of this year with a production of 40 thousand tons of food.

This outcome, superior to the same period last year, will allow offers of a dozen agricultural products in the different markets in the territory at lower prices compared to previous years.

Jorge Luis Tartabul, representative of the Agriculture Ministry in the province told ACN that they strictly worked in over 500 gardens in Villa Clara to guarantee food for the population.

Among the priorities is taking advantage of the water because the lack of rain affects the availability of the natural resource, he said.

He recalled that this type of crop requires good development, from an organic substratum and lots of water that is why almost all of the productive centers has wells or cisterns to guarantee constant irrigation.

The Agricultural representative assured that the lack of rain affects the cultivation and that is why strict measures has been put in place to save water and give a better use to this resource.

Tartabul said that the province has 82 protected or semi protected production units, which will allow regulating the humidity and temperature making them more efficient and productive.

The intense sun damages many of the vegetable leaves and that is why this year the sector is increasing the cultivation of beets, carrots, string beans and radish.

Olga Paz, local from Santa Clara recognized that the offer of vegetables has increased this year and at good prices.
She commented that at the Sunday fairs and in the different urban gardens, the population can purchase different fresh vegetables and better quality than in previous years.

Leticia Alonso, resident of Placetas explained that there are varieties of offers in different markets, cheaper and good quality.
The prices decreased and quantity increased with a diversity of products in comparison to other years, she stressed.
