Use of Alternative Energy Sources has Great Acceptance among Cuban Farmers

VILLA CLARA, Cuba, Apr 3 (acn) The use of new energy sources in Cuban agriculture has its representation in Villa Clara with the installation this year of 86 turbines added to solar panels, which can extract water at great depth without using conventional fuels.

Fausto Vega, an official of the Ministry of Agriculture, told ACN that these pumps are located in places where there is no electricity and there are underground reserves of water.
He added that this work is included in the Cuban program to mitigate the damaging effects of the drought already seen throughout the island.
He said that there are in the province a thousand windmills, 64 of them in the areas of La Vitrina livestock company, the largest cattle population in the territory, an experience that is gradually generalized to take advantage of wind energy in the extraction of water.
Betzi Arrojo, an official with the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP by its Spanish acronym) in Villa Clara, told ACN that the territory stands out among the rest of the country for the use of renewable sources.
The peasant leader recalled that for more than a five-year period they have developed a steady job of training farmers on the installation of excrement plants on their farms.
The substitution of conventional sources for renewable ones includes the manufacture of vegetable biomass bricks used with high efficiency in rustic kitchens, thus replacing the wood and contributing to reduce deforestation, she added.
