Nodarse wins third stage of Tour of Cuba
GRANMA, Cuba, Feb 17 (acn) Artemisa´s Felix Nodarse was the leading protagonist yesterday of the Cuban National Road Cycling Tour by climbing to the podium in two intermediate sprints in addition to win the Santiago de Cuba-Bayamo stage, with time of 3.08:46 hours.
The young athlete thus won for the second consecutive year this stage, which covered 125 kilometers, and was followed by Frank Consuegra (Holguin) and Willy Gonzalez (Santiago).
He told ACN that he went out to make his best effort and felt very strong, which allowed him to rank second in the Contramaestre intermediate sprint (kilometer 76th), and third in the one of Jiguaní (kilometer 100th) and get in good shape to the finish line in Bayamo city.
The only mountain prize of the day, in Puerto de Moya, was won by Alejandro Parra (Holguín), escorted by Jose Mujica (Artemisa) and Pedro Portuondo (Santiago), the latter remains as leader of the general individual classification.
Onel Santaclara (Guantanamo), Yoselín Piedra (Matanzas) and Alejandro Carriles (Havana), in that order, headed the podium in the first intermediate sprint, at Palma Soriano (kilometer 48th). Santaclara also won the second one, in Contramaestre, followed by Nodarse and Darián Suárez (Cienfuegos); while the leaders in that of Jiguaní were Consuegra, Gonzalez and Nodarse, in that order.
After this stage, Portuondo, winner of the first two, remains the individual general leader, with time of 7.48:27 hours, ahead of Victor Horta (Ciego de Avila), who is 2.09 minutes behind the leader, and Yoandry Freire (Sancti Spíritus) (-2.34 min).
Santaclara remains the best on the intermediate sprints, and the young Hidalgo Vera (Guantanamo) is the individual general leader in the U-23 category.
Santiago de Cuba, Sancti Spíritus, Ciego de Avila and Holguin, in that order, lead the teams classification.
Today´s stage is a team time-trial stretch, starting at 10 am in the municipality of Cacocún and finishing in Holguin city.
