SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Feb 7 (acn) The women's event of the Cuban national wrestling championship showed the great potential a young group of athletes have for the current Olympic cycle (2017-2020).
Luis de la Portilla, national commissioner of that sport, said that this competitive quadrennium should show a great international awakening of the Cuban women´s wrestling.
Filiberto Delgado, head coach of the Cuban team, noted that the girls who excelled in the national competition are very young; they are under 14 years, and from provinces throughout the country.
We must have a little patience with them; it will be a very tough task considering that they are teenagers, said Delgado, coach of several generations of champions such as Olympic monarchs in the men´s event Yandro Quintana and Filiberto Azcuy.
He emphasized that they will focus on attending the women's world championship to be held this year at a date yet to be determined, and that in that event they can achieve good results to set a base for the Central American, Pan American and Olympic Games.
Jaqueline Stornell (63 kg), one of the main Cuban women wrestlers, stated that there is a lot of quality in the emerging figures, "they are training very well, I see a good future, the people can count on them tomorrow".
