Coffee production grows 20 percent in Santiago de Cuba

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Jan 13 (acn) Coffee collectors in the province of Santiago de Cuba face today the final stretch of the current coffee harvest, estimated at almost 1.5 million cans of the grain, for a growth of 19 percent in relation to the previous season.

At the end of 2016 it was announced the collection of 1.3 million cans of coffee beans, production that maintains the harvest at 95 percent of execution, now with the main decision in the species Robusta and in the municipality of Tercer Frente, major coffee producer in Cuba.
Specialists from the Ministry of Agriculture corroborated that since all coffee is being collected this will allow the territory, in a few days, to reach the final result.
In this final stretch, peasants and their families provide their contribution in rural areas to complete the more than 200 000 cans of the grain that are still to be collected.
Norberto Garcés, president of a Basic Unit of Cooperative Production, said that in line with the increase in plantations for the renovation, they expect to collect almost 2 239 pounds of gold coffee per hectare in the coming harvest, as a sign of growth.
In addition, total sales for domestic exports and consumption are met by 81 percent of quality coffee delivered to Rolando Ayud processing factory.
