Drought affects crops in Central Cuba

SANTA CLARA, Cuba, Jan 6 (acn) Limitations on the availability of water affect the irrigation of crops such as sugar cane and rice because the reservoirs of Villa Clara province only store 455.5 million cubic meters of the liquid, for 45 percent of their total capacity.

The low rainfall in the last year caused a decrease in the levels of the dams, which at the same date of 2015 contained 68.5 percent of their volume.

Cristóbal Pérez, specialist of Hydraulic Use in this territory, told ACN that there is a complicated situation with the amount of water stored.

He explained that the Alacranes reservoir, the largest in Villa Clara, is at 49.2 percent of its capacity, and water is mainly dedicated to agricultural irrigation, livestock, the cultivation of young fishes and the sugar production of Héctor Rodriguez sugar mill.

Perez added that during 11 months of 2016, rainfall behaved below the historical average and December was the driest month of the last two decades.

According to a forecast by the Institute of Meteorology, January is one of the least humid months of the year and so far rainfall is below the historical average in central and eastern Cuba.
