HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 12 (ACN) Canadian Helga Stephenson, who was executive director of the Toronto International Film Festival will receive on Monday in Havana the Coral of Honor Award during the current Film Festival in the Cuban capital.
She told CAN that it was an honor and surprise and stressed that the region's films constitutes one of her greatest passions and expects to continue promoting cinema for the rest of her life.
The Canadian artist added that the continent's works attracts her above all its history and highlighted the current prestige in addition to the role of the young directors in their development.
Stephenson, with her long history in support of Latin America's audiovisual process and who lived in Cuba in 1974, confessed in her love for Cuba and pointed out that the best retribution has been friendship.
She said that she met the founders of the Cuban Film Institute at the time and Titon (Tomas Gutierrez Alea) a gentle man, whose dreams of strengthening the Cuban film industry was fulfilled.
Helga Stephenson led the TIFF from 1987 to 1993, she founded the Film Festival for Human Rights in Toronto and in 2011 was executive director of the Canadian Academy of Film and Television until 2016.
The Coral of Honor, the most important award given by the Cuban Film Institute was given to Brazilian Ruy Guerra last year.
