Cuba and the US hold fifth bilateral commissionHAVANA, Cuba, Dec 8 (ACN) The fifth Cuba-US bilateral commission was held in Havana with the participation of delegations from both countries, the Cuban Foreign Affairs Ministry (MINREX) posted in its website.

The director-general of the US Department at MINREX, Josefina Vidal, led the Cuban delegation, while Mari Carmen Aponte, Acting Assistant Secretary in the Department of State's Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, led the one from the United States.

According to a communiqué, the parts reviewed the compliance with the agreements of the fourth bilateral commission held last September 30 in Washington DC, and they agreed on the next steps to take in the coming weeks.

The Cuban delegation stressed on the need of the lifting of the US blockade in order to move towards a true normalization of relations between the two countries, since it hinders economic-commercial development despite the positive measures taken by the Obama administration.

Also, Cuba insisted on its claim for the immediate devolution of the illegally occupied territory of the Guantanamo bay naval base, and on the elimination of interference policies that are harmful to Cuban sovereignty.

Both delegations agreed to work on organizing high level visits between the two governments, advance on the negotiations and eventually the signing off on agreements in different sectors, have technical meetings on aviation and between coastguards, as well as other working meetings.
