Fidel Castro´s funeral cortege departs from Camaguey

Fidel Castro´s funeral cortege departs from CamagueyCAMAGUEY, Cuba, Dec 2 (ACN) On the day that marks the 60th anniversary of the landing of the Granma yacht, the funeral cortege that carries the ashes of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro departed for eastern Cuba.

The Caravan of Freedom, as the cortege is known, spent the night at the Ignacio Agramonte Revolution Square of this city, 550 kilometers east of Havana. There, the Camaguey top officials had received it in the early hours of Thursday night.

During the night, tens of thousands of people came to pay their last tribute, and despite of the drizzle, many stayed all night long, singing revolutionary songs and chanting I am Fidel.

The Caravan is traveling Cuba in reverse from the one led by Fidel in January 1959, when he led it from Santiago de Cuba to Havana, right after the triumph of the Revolution.

The cortege will now move to Las Tunas, and later to Holguin, before tonight´s stop in Bayamo city, in the eastern province of Granma. The ashes will rest at the Ñico Lopez museum, former Carlos Manuel de Cespedes garrison, the one attack by Fidel´s forces on July 26, 1953 at the same time Fidel was trying to take the Moncada garrison in Santiago de Cuba.

A vigil will be held at the Homeland Square in Bayamo, the place where Fidel delivered his last July 26 speech before getting sick in 2006.
