Cuba and Switzerland hold migration talks

Cuba and Switzerland hold migration talksHAVANA, Cuba, Nov 25 (ACN) Cuba and Switzerland reaffirmed their will and commitment to take joint actions in order to guarantee orderly, regular and safe flow of travelers between the two countries, during a round of migration talks held on November 22 and 23 in Havana.

The talks were headed by the director of the Consular Affairs and Cubans Residing Abroad Department under the Cuban Foreign Ministry, Ernesto Soberon and by ambassador Urs von Arb, director of International Cooperation at the State Secretariat for Migration under the Swiss Justice and Police Ministry.

According to the Cuban Ministry´s website, the both delegations exchanged information on current migration regulations in their countries and on the flow of travelers between Cuba and Switzerland.

The Cuban side reiterated its concern on the persistent US Cuban Adjustment Act and the dry-feet-wet-feet policy, and the Parole for Cuban doctors maintained by Washington in an effort to encourage irregular and unsafe migration of Cuban nationals to the United States.

The island´s representatives said that such policies lead to human losses and favor crime, such as the trafficking in persons, illegal smuggling of migrants, migration fraud and the use of violence, thus posing problems on other nations.

The Swiss and the Cuban delegations also held a negotiating meeting on November 23 on the draft accord between the Cuban government and the Swiss Federal Council on the exemption of visas for holders of diplomatic, special and service passports.

The meeting aimed at addressing pending issues to reach a final agreement, which will be submitted to the signing by the parts.
