HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 9 (acn) A large fire caused serious damage to seven state-run facilities in the corner of Enramadas and San Pedro streets in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba this Tuesday afternoon.
According to Granma newspaper, the disaster struck the Mustique and Puma shops, the Las Novedades icecream parlor, the Marilyn cafeteria, Trimagen printing shop, the Kon-tiki club and another cafeteria.
Firefighters from three Santiago neighborhoods worked to extinguish the fire with nine trucks, and the support of 23 water trucks from the provincial Water Resources Enterprise, along members of the police.
The site where the fire started was of difficult access, and left little room for maneuvers, according to the firefighters. Still, they managed to enter the place, and despite the huge amount of combustible material they found, they succeeded in containing it.
First Secretary of the Communist party in Santiago Lazaro Exposito arrived to the sinister and headed the works. He later highlighted the cooperation of the city´s inhabitants to minimize the damage.
