Namibia´s historic leader Sam Nujoma to visit Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 24 (acn) Namibia´s historic leader Sam Nujoma, first president of that southern African nation, will pay a visit to Cuba September 27 to October 3.

According to the Cuban Foreign Ministry, Nujoma met in the capital Windhoek with Cuban ambassador to Namibia Giraldo Mazola and he felt moved to again visit the Caribbean nation, which he described as a land of great friends as he referred to Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro.

Following the setting up of the South Western African People´s Organization (SWAPO) in April 1960, Nujoma was elected president of that movement and he led the guerrilla fight against the occupation by the South African racist regime.

On January 1990, Nujoma was unanimously elected first president of Namibia.

The Namibian leader stressed the key role played by Cuba in the liberation and independence of his country and he conveyed the endless gratefulness of the Namibian people for that.

In Cuba, Nujoma will be bestowed the Mehdi Ben Barca Order, a solidarity distinction granted by the Havana-based Organization in Solidarity with the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Namibia and Cuba established diplomatic relations on May 21, 1990, the same day that the African nation achieved independence
