Wi-Fi along Havana´s Malecon available before 2017

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 21 (acn) Before the end of 2016, the Telecommunications Company of Cuba (ETECSA by its Spanish acronym) intends to provide Wi-Fi technology, for Internet browsing, to Malecon Avenue, from Prado Street to the entrance of 5th Avenue tunnel in Havana.

Eudes Monier Nunez, head of the Department of Marketing and Communication of ETECSA in Havana Division, told ACN they already identified where wireless access points will be placed as well as the technical equipment for the service.
He explained that the start of the benefits will depend on the development of the assembly, which will be complex due to the extension of Cuba's most famous seawall promenade.
On the decision to bring wireless service to this area, Monier Nunez said it was taken into account the influx of people, mainly youngsters who make extensive use of the Internet.
According to him, 17 out of 30 wireless zones to open in 2016 have been already installed, and the rest will be available when acquiring the necessary equipment.
Iris Duran, communicator of the organization, said that all Havana municipalities have at least one wireless area and some territories, depending on their geographic extent and population density, have up to five of them.
Six of the points created this year began providing services last Saturday in the municipalities of Guanabacoa, San Miguel, Cerro, Arroyo Naranjo, Marianao and Habana del Este.
Monier Nunez added they are also enhancing the wireless service in 12 computing clubs, 33 spaces of Correos de Cuba Company and 18 rooms belonging to ETECSA.
In 2015 ETECSA opened 17 Internet browsing areas with Wi-Fi technology in public spaces of Havana, in order to extend the use of new technologies in the country and respond to the Cuban strategy of massive and secure access to cyberspace.
